Emergency dementia care home placement
Dementia behaviours can escalate in days. Here is the legal route for a same-week emergency placement, and the honest answer on NHS Continuing Healthcare for dementia.
Behaviours that trigger emergency placement
- Wandering at night with risk of getting lost or hypothermic.
- Refusal to eat or drink for more than 48 hours.
- Aggression that puts the carer or the person at risk.
- Sundowning that prevents any sleep, leading to carer collapse.
- New incontinence with skin breakdown the carer cannot manage.
CHC and dementia: the honest answer
The NHS CHC National Framework explicitly states dementia is not automatic. The decision is about whether the main need is health (then CHC) or social (then council). For rapidly deteriorating dementia, ask for the Fast Track Pathway Tool. CHC Framework ↗NICE NG97 covers the clinical management. NICE NG97 ↗
Deprivation of Liberty in a same-week move
Moving someone with advanced dementia who lacks capacity to a care home is a deprivation of liberty in law. In an emergency the home applies for a Standard Authorisation; an Urgent Authorisation can be self-granted for up to 7 days while the standard one is processed. You do not have to wait for the paperwork before the move happens.
