Ask the home manager (not the receptionist) if a bed is available this week. Confirm in writing by email before agreeing anything. Use the CQC find-a-home and the Care Inspectorate (Scotland) / CIW (Wales) / RQIA (NI) portals to cross-check ratings.

The phone script that works
- Ask for the home manager (not the receptionist).
- State the need: "residential respite, two weeks, starting this week".
- Ask: "do you have a bed this week and can you email me the all-in weekly rate now?"

- Do not pay any deposit by card on a first call. Wait for the written quote and contract.
How to avoid scams
- Cross-check the CQC (or CI / CIW / RQIA) registration. Unregistered providers commit a criminal offence.
- Never wire money to a personal account.
- Be suspicious of anyone who asks for an admission fee above £500.
- If the home is part of a group, confirm the bed exists by ringing the group's regional office.

Because we cannot verify them in real time across the UK. Publishing a list we cannot stand behind would harm the families we are here to help. We point to the directories that do this professionally.
How fast can a same-week bed actually be confirmed?
If the postcode has 5+ homes within 10 miles, often inside one hour of phoning. Rural postcodes can take longer.
Do council homes have same-week vacancies?
Yes, but they are usually allocated by the council's commissioning team, not by walk-up enquiry. Ask the council duty desk.
